Why AI Can’t Replace Therapy: A Psychotherapist’s Perspective
Why I Don’t Recommend Using ChatGPT as a Substitute for Therapy
As a licensed psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand the depth, nuance, and responsibility that comes with providing ethical mental health care. While ChatGPT can be a useful tool for general support or education, it’s not a replacement for working with a trained therapist—and here’s why:
It Lacks Clinical Judgment
AI can mimic supportive conversation, but it can’t assess, diagnose, or respond to the complexities of human behavior. Therapists are trained to notice subtle cues—like shifts in tone, body language, and patterns over time—and to respond in ways that are clinically informed and ethically sound.
No Accountability
Therapists are held to strict ethical codes and regulated by licensing boards. ChatGPT isn’t a person, which means there’s no true responsibility or oversight for the outcomes of the advice it offers.
It’s Not Truly Personalized
While ChatGPT can generate responses that feel relevant, it doesn’t know your full story, your history, or the relational dynamics that shape your life. Therapy is a process—it evolves over time through trust, insight, and genuine connection.
It Can’t Handle Crisis Situations
If someone is in crisis or at risk of harm, AI cannot intervene or provide real-time support. A licensed professional can assess risk and guide someone to safety with appropriate care and urgency.
Confidentiality Isn’t Guaranteed
Therapy is protected by legal and ethical standards like HIPAA. Conversations with AI don’t carry the same level of privacy or protection.
Bottom line: I’ll always advocate for human-to-human therapy. Licensed professionals are trained, regulated, and committed to your well-being in a way no AI ever can be.
As technology continues to evolve, it's important to remember that healing happens in relationship—not just in conversation. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply ready to explore therapy with someone who sees the whole you, I’m here to help.
